In the world that Mikale "Reed" is from, magic is a genetic ability. It is possible thanks to two genes: Magical Capacity ("MC,") and Empathy. A magician's magic capacity dictates their maximum magic output. For some it may be only a spark, while others may be capable of levelign cities. Empathy is the ability to create magical energy from emotions, and fill the MC with energy. Empathy is also a recessive trait, and has slowly been lost over time. Magic Capacity, on the other hand, is a dominant gene. And with each progressive generation, MC is getting stronger and stronger.
Mikale has both of these traits, which is unusual among male magicians in the modern age. Moreso uncommon is the fact that neither of Mikale's parents knew about their own magic: They, like many other humans, did not have the Empathy needed to make use of their MC. In Mikale's case, he was fortunate enough to be born with the missing Empathy trait.
However, all of this genetic mumbo isn't all that makes his world's magic "unique."

Hundreds of years ago, magical society agreed to a "Price System." It essentially limits the amount of magic a magician can use at once, regardless of their maximum MC. This was decided upon to ease concerns of the non-magical population, who feared that magic would grow to god-like proportions. In exchange for accepting a limiting curse on their MC gene, magicians were accepted into a proper "Magical Society" and protected from witch hunting.
Because the price is carved into the MC gene, it uses the magician's own power to activate. This results in a highly tailored curse, which extracts a price meaningful to each individual. The price is always something important to the offending magician, scaled in accordance to how much magic they overused.
In Mikale's case, the thing most important to him is a promise. A promise he made to his best friend, Samantha Fletcher, when he was only about eight years old. A promise to always be there for her. In order to take that promise away, Mikale's magic curse blocks his neurological ability to recognize Samantha. Because he's overused his magic, he's now physically unable to recognize Samantha. His brain simply won't make the connection, even if he were staring her in the face.
In a game setting, Mikale may also lose memories of Samantha as punishment for using "too much" magic. This price would be enacted when Mikale performs large scale magic. Particularly, anything that has a wider impact that just his general area.

Magic is Mikale's world is a very broad term. Spells are created by converting emotional energy into magical power, which are then weaved into magical spells. A magic spell can generally accomplish anything that a Magician sets out to do. The limiting factors are A) The Magician's MC, B) Their imagination, or scientific knowledge, and C) Their personality.
I'll briefly elaborate on what his magic can do, and how these limitations limit him.

There are two forms a created object can take: Magical and Physical. A magical item is something created entirely from, well, magic. A physical item is something created from existing physical items, but using magic to manipulate them. For example, creating a dress from fabric and using magic rather than traditional sewing techniques.
In Mikale's case, he mentally separates magical creations from physical ones. Because of this, anything he creates purely with magic will look different: It is a glowing, translucent ghost of what it is supposed to be. This means that anything he makes with pure magic will stand out, because it glows, and is inconvenient in a society where magic is a secret.
He will almost always use physical object creating techniques. If there is no physical base, he's likely to shy away from creating the object magically.

Mikale's second limiting factor in item creation is his understanding, but this also plays as a strength in some situations. The reason it is limiting is because, in order to make something physically, a magician needs to understand the physical process. You must know how to sew in order to turn fabric into a dress, even with magic. And, well... Mikale is, unfortunately, a bit stupid. He's not the super genius magician that his friends are. Mikale can sew, cook, play a few sports, and otherwise only has a minor expertise in firearms. But he doesn't know enough about explosions, the elements, etc. to manipulate them effectively.
On the plus side... a Magician who doesn't realize they're stupid is not limited by that stupidity. This is actually the "imagination" factor in play. If a Magician can imagine it, they can create it. They simply need to believe in it. So when Mikale is mistaken about something, he can still create spells as if it were a fact. For example, if Mikale thinks that clouds are physical puffs of cotton then the clouds he creates will be physical puffs of cotton.

If a Magician can imagine it, they can create it. They simply need to believe in it. So when Mikale is mistaken about something, he can still create spells as if it were a fact. It's due to this stupidity that Mikale can manipulate shadows. Most magicians cannot do this, because they realize a shadow is not a physical thing. As a child, Mikale's intense fear of the dark and shadowy figures led to him being able to weaponize them in his magic: Precisely because, in his head, they were threats.
Though Mikale as a teen knows better, his fear of the dark still allows him to turn shadows into frightening weapons. Mikale can turn shadows into physical threats. They can become "shadow monsters," such as making your own shadow fight you or morphing it into a monster that fights you. He can also peel them off the ground and use them to physically block escapes, tie people up, or cut them. Because yes, btw, his shadows are very sharp like knives. Once again: His personal visions, and fears, are both reflected in his personal magic.

The Shadow Magic section probably implied this enough, but I'll reiterate for clarity: Yes, magic can be used to create attacks. Magicians can create the attacks that they visualize and believe in. Mikale's own attacks are not strictly limited to his shadow magic, though that is his most unique strength.
